Mario was six years old when he performed for the first time in the circus Monti arena. After initial performances with his brother and father, he has specialized in juggling, especially club juggling, for the past 15 years. With engagements in the Broadway Variété and in a dinner show in Germany, he was able to gain first experiences outside of the “usual” arena at a young age. Mario and his colleague Willem took part in the YOUNG STAGE Festival in Basel in 2019 and received various awards. Mario is always happy to pass on his knowledge and skills to other passionate jugglers.
Katharina completed her training as an artist at the École Nationale de Cirque de Montréal in 2013. Since then she has been collaborating with artists from different fields. She was a guest at various festivals, opera productions, gala events, circuses and theater stages, including the Salzburg Festival, Teatro alla Scala, Grand Théâtre de la ville de Luxembourg, Circus Monti, Circus Knie as well as TOHU in Montréal.
Marius Cavin, born and raised in Basel, found joy in the circus at a young age. To be precise at the age of 11 when he started his career in the District Circus Bruederholz (QCB). After 18 years of age and the associated exit from his active career in QCB, he went on tour with the Chnopf circus. There he got to know the profession of circus artist better and decided to try it himself. In another year in Basel, he then prepared for the entrance exams of circus schools in Europe. In addition, as a trainer in the Robiano youth circus, he was able to gain initial experience in teaching. In 2018 he finally began his training as a professional circus artist at the “Academy for Circus and Performance Art” (ACAPA) in the Netherlands, where he has now successfully completed the second year.
Nora’s circus dream woke up as she played around on the trampoline in the back yard. Her later work in the youth circus was not enough for her. Nora wanted to become a professional artist and travel around the world with her job. After completing the circus school in Berlin, the dream turned into a lifestyle. Nora works as a freelancer internationally, has played ensemble shows with Cirque Eloize, has performed in the revue theater “Friedrichstadtpalast” in Berlin and was then engaged by the world-famous Cirque du Soleil
As a teenager, Dirk discovered how much fun circus is. In the beginning it was a hobby alongside the teacher studies. At that time he was a lot at the juggling and acrobatics conventions, but soon he was on the road with the Mixtura Unica art theater as a professional artist. For 10 years he has worked as a clinic clown at the ZKJ Freiburg and as a circus teacher at the Luna Circus. With great joy he transforms one school after the other into a circus.
Her dance career took her from the Ballet School Karlsruhe (1992-2000) to the Palucca School Dresden, University of Dance (2003-2007) and finally to the Circus Akademie Berlin (2011-2014). She has been on international stages for over 12 years, whether in solos, duos or groups, whether as a dancer, actress or artist. Always interested in new things, she teaches children, adults and professional artists in dance, movement and various circus disciplines.
Marta Pitarch Rosello
Her interest in people led her to study social work which completed in 2006 and thus laid an important foundation stone for the Work with children and young people. She formed in the circus area attending circus workshops (aerial acrobatics and clowning) in Barcelona, Toulon, Toulouse and Madrid continue. Marta is a co-founder of the Circus group “SILOSENOMECUELGO” (2006) and has been a circus teacher since then active for children, teenagers and adults.
Jeanine Ebnöther Trott
Jeanine was trained at ESAC, École Supérieure des Arts du Cirque in Brussels. Specialization in contact juggling and acrobatic partnering. Since 2005 she has been touring the world with solo acts and in group formations, including with ‘can a shadow have a person’ (shortlisted by CircusNext Platforms 2017), the duo ‘Aromatic Company’, Zirkus Chnopf, Critical Mess etc. Various circus universities (NICA, Codarts, Acapa) hired Jeanine as a guest teacher. She incorporates the principles of the F. M. Alexander technique and her enthusiasm into her lessons: be it juggling, acrobatics or movement research. Jeanine likes Chinese tea and loves to swim, eat and dance for life!
Everything started with a dream. The dream of being a clown. Since then he has lived for the stage and arena. After two years on tour with the Wunderplunder circus, he went to the school for clowns, comedy and comedy. Nikolas is now the co-founder of two theater companies: The Cie. AMLOU and from family theater ANIKO. He works as a director for actors and artists, was a children’s coach for Papa Moll Film and has been working as a circus teacher for over 10 years.
Philipp was enthusiastic about the circus for the first time on long journeys and then came to the clowning via the improtheater. He has been a clown and circus teacher for over 13 years (TuT, Jojo, Dieter Bartels, Diego Maurino, Shiva Grings and others), but also works as an artist. He has been part of the open clown training in Freiburg for over 11 years and organizes the Freiburg Clown Convention, does many circus projects with children but also adult education in clown, theater and circus games, as well as team building, group processes and self-expression. Why does the project exist?
The Circus Festival YOUNG STAGE cannot take place in 2020 due to the current corona virus situation. Shortly before it took place, we unfortunately had to cancel the festival. However, we don’t like just doing nothing. We love circus projects, no matter in which form, that’s why we invented a spontaneous circus project for the summer. There have been no shows for months, circuses have to pause, professional artists have been unemployed for many weeks and are extremely grateful if they get a job. In addition, a large number of families with children will not be going on vacation this summer, and the day vacation offers all almost fully booked already. We would like to make an active and meaningful contribution to this situation, which serves everyone and since we can do “Circus” best, we have created the “Circus Camps”.
Who’s behind the project?
International Circus Festival YOUNG STAGE Basel
YOUNG STAGE is the largest circus festival in Switzerland and one of the world’s most important platforms for young professional artists in the field of contemporary circus. The festival has been taking place in Basel since 2007. Every year around 600 artists from all over the world apply to participate in YOUNG STAGE. The festival is made up of the artist competition, an open-air circus spectacle, a national circus convention and various specialist events. YOUNG STAGE 2020 unfortunately had to be canceled due to the corona crisis. However, the team is and remains infected by the circus virus and has therefore decided to organize a meaningful project during the summer holidays for children who cannot go on holiday and artists who have been unemployed for months due to the corona situation.
At the wasteland at Walkeweg 1, where a skyscraper will one day decorate the Dreispitz, a place for contemporary circus was created at the end of 2014. With Station Circus, a rehearsal and performance space was created for the local circus scene and international guest performances were brought to the Basel region. An exciting and varied contemporary circus program has taken place in recent years. The mobile temporary use project has been located on Münchensteinerstrasse since April 2019. 103 between BVB tram depot and Wolfgottesacker cemetery. In its fifth year, Station Circus again presents companies and artists with their work on the Dreispitz.
The Circus Luna is specialized in circus projects with children. Circus events, project weeks, school projects, workshops and much more are among their offers, which they implement throughout Switzerland. The team is made up of people with very different experiences and training. Independent circus and theater people work together in the Circus Luna. All of them have a (social) educational and / or artistic / theatrical education. This ensures care, responsibility, security and a high artistic quality.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Such a project is not possible without financial support! We thank the following foundations – and all other foundations that would prefer to remain anonymous – for the spontaneous and generous commitment to support the YOUNG STAGE-CIRCUS-CAMPS!
Our team is in close contact with the health department of the canton of Basel-Stadt and has developed a protection concept for the circus camps, which corresponds to the BAG’s current guidelines for sports training, camps and performances. The participating children and their parents will be informed in detail about the protective measures before the start of the camps.
